The much-debated transition to a sustainable – or green – economy has broad support from the Brazilian population, who trust in this change and believe that it will generate new jobs. For 75% – or 3 out of every 4 people – this transformation will generate new jobs. For the majority of these respondents (54%), there will be the emergence of "many jobs," while 21% expect "few new jobs."

The survey conducted by the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) and Nexus also shows who does not believe that the transition to a sustainable economy will promote new job opportunities. For only 16%, the change may worsen the job market. Of these, 9% said that job creation will decrease, 5% believe it will "decrease significantly," and 2%, it will end.

The study also shows that the belief in the expansion of job opportunities increases when the respondent's income is higher. This category includes 78% of respondents who earn more than five minimum wages. Also included are 78% of those who earn between 2 and 5 minimum wages. The same applies to 76% of those who earn between 1 and 2 minimum wages. Among those who earn up to 1 minimum wage, 67% believe in an increase in job opportunities resulting from a sustainable economy.

The research also displays data related to the respondents' education level in relation to the economic transition. Among those with a completed higher education, 79% think that a sustainable economy will be beneficial for job creation. Among those with a high school education, 78% share the same opinion. For those surveyed with a completed primary education, 68% believe there will be improvements with the arrival of the green economy.

According to Ricardo Cappelli, president of ABDI, a sustainable economy will require more qualified professionals and, therefore, higher salaries.

"Thus, it is natural that those with more education and income better perceive the opportunities that this change can bring," he said in an official statement.

The research also presents complementary data, by sex, age, and regions of the country. Men believe more (59%) in the emergence of new jobs than women (49%). In addition, confidence in the transformation grows among younger people, with 62% among those aged 16 to 24 and 59% among those aged 25 to 40. In the 41 to 59 age group, the belief rises to 49%. The percentage drops to 46% among those over 60 years old.

The numbers of those who bet on the green economy producing jobs are high in the different Brazilian regions. In the Southeast and South, 78% believe in the trend. In the North and Central-West regions, the figure is 73%. In the Northeast, the number reaches 67%.

For this research, Nexus states that it conducted 2,021 face-to-face interviews with people over 18 years of age in 27 states of the country. The work was carried out between July 14th and 21st of this year.
