The proposal for the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF), led by Brazil, has been well received by other countries, said Finance Minister Fernando Haddad on Tuesday (4), during a conversation with journalists, before participating in a panel at the COP30 Business & Finance Forum, promoted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, in São Paulo.
“I am very excited about the fact that the TFF, which is a forest fund, is being very well received. This is the flagship of the Brazilian Presidency starting next week,” said the minister.
“With the first expressions of support from some countries, which could happen next week, we understand that next year we can have a very fruitful year to raise the first resources,” Haddad added.
The government's expectation, the minister reaffirmed, is to reach US$10 billion in public investments by next year to finance tropical forests around the world. “We are putting a practical proposal for the sustainability of tropical forests on the negotiating table, and it is being well received,” he reinforced.
The TFFF is a mechanism aimed at protecting forests and provides that countries that preserve their tropical forests will be financially rewarded via a global investment fund. “It's like a forest bank,” explained the Finance Minister.
“This fund raises capital at a low interest rate, lends it at a higher interest rate, and with the difference, with the profit, you remunerate the tropical forests of the countries adhering to the proposal to combat general deforestation per hectare.”
This money, the minister further clarified, will be allocated to countries with tropical rainforest biomes that protect them, "with deforestation not exceeding 1/2% per year, but tending towards zero."
