Abu Dhabi expands emissions monitoring and accelerates transition to a low-carbon economy.
The MRV program already gathers data from more than 250 companies and accounts for approximately 90 million tons of CO₂ in its first year, supporting the goal of reducing emissions by 22% by 2027.
Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, completed the first year of the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) program, an initiative that reinforces the emirate's role as a regional benchmark in environmental management and carbon emission reduction. This information was released by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
The aim is to consolidate a reliable and verifiable database to support public and private decisions, increasing transparency and directing more efficient decarbonization actions in strategic sectors.
What is the MRV program and why does it matter?
MRV is a system created to measure and monitor greenhouse gas emissions in regulated activities. With this, the government can accurately map which areas concentrate the greatest climate impacts — and which actions can generate faster results in carbon reduction.
More than 10 sectors monitored, including energy and transport
The program covers more than 10 essential sectors of the local economy, such as:
energy
oil and gas
industry
transport
The objective is to expand control over emissions and strengthen data-driven environmental policies, especially in areas with a large weight in the emirate's economic matrix.
The first year recorded approximately 90 million tons of CO₂.
During the first year of implementation, MRV collected information totaling approximately 90 million tons of CO₂, a number that represents the majority of emissions from regulated activities in Abu Dhabi.
The program also gathered data from more than 250 companies, creating a robust framework for continuous monitoring and climate planning.
Data Helps Companies Reduce Costs and Increase Efficiency
Beyond the environmental impact, MRV also has a direct effect on industrial and energy management. The system allows for the identification of processes with high carbon emissions and, based on this, guides improvements such as:
increased energy efficiency
reduced waste
decreased operational costs
reduced carbon intensity of production
In practice, the initiative connects sustainability with productivity and competitiveness.
The goal is to reduce emissions by 22% by 2027
The program is aligned with the emirate's goal of achieving a 22% reduction in emissions by 2027, also supporting the adoption of cleaner technologies and measures that increase long-term economic resilience.
The project involves public-private partnerships and reinforces transparency.
According to Shaikha Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Protection Agency, the program played an important role in transforming climate objectives into concrete and measurable actions.
The MRV (Market Value Tracking) was developed in collaboration with public and private partners, focusing on ensuring transparency and compliance with climate laws, strengthening the construction of a low-carbon economy.
