Earth Day: What if Earth had no more water?
On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. A symbolic date, created in 1970, which began as an environmental awareness movement in response to the growing impact of human activity on the planet. Since then, this movement has spread around the world, reaching more than 190 countries and millions of people who, each year, reaffirm their commitment to a more sustainable future.
But amid the campaigns and tributes, I invite you to pause and imagine: what would planet Earth be like without water?
It seems like an extreme exercise, but it's not.
Today, more than 2 billion people worldwide live under some degree of water scarcity, according to United Nations data. In Brazil, more than 30 million people do not have access to drinking water at home. And if nothing is done, by 2030 we will face a global deficit of 40% between freshwater supply and demand.
These numbers are not just statistics. They are warnings.
Without water, life collapses.
There is no agriculture. There is no food production. There is no hygiene, health, or education. There is no dignity.
Water is the foundation of everything, from the economy to human coexistence, from environmental preservation to the right to life.
That is why, on this Earth Day, we need to go beyond symbolism. We need to think about the real consequences of neglecting the water crisis. We need to understand that preserving water is not an isolated gesture: it is a commitment to the planet and to people, especially those who live without access to necessities.
To imagine an Earth without water is, in practice, to imagine an unrecognizable planet. An arid, silent place, without cycles, without rebirth. A planet still called “Earth,” but without the element that gives it life.
The truth is that there is no sustainable future without water justice. Water must be at the center of our public policies, our innovations, and our daily choices. We need to invest in solutions that respect local contexts, engage with communities, and promote democratic and continuous access.
If we want to take care of the Earth, we need to start by taking care of water.
Because without water, there is no life.
Without water, there is no future.
And the future, it is worth remembering, begins now!
With gratitude, 🌿🌍
