Private Forests Become a Source of Value: The Renaissance of the Green Economy - OPINION

By Ana Lucia Cunha-Busch

Worldwide, the concept of environmental preservation is beginning to transform into an economic opportunity. A new global wave shows that private forest areas, previously seen only as liabilities, are now becoming profitable assets.

This global movement is occurring especially in regions of Europe, but is also beginning to appear in the United States and other parts of the world. Landowners, companies, and research centers are seeing value in preservation, integrating conservation, tourism, science, and environmental services. Instead of deforestation or being used only for agriculture, these areas are beginning to generate income through visits, research, and environmental projects.

The Forest as a Generator of Value

The global model is simple: the preserved forest begins to generate income continuously. Companies adopt these areas for environmental compensation, dissemination of their climate goals, and scientific research. At the same time, ecotourism, focused on short visits, is becoming a robust source of income, especially in Europe and the United States.

This cycle creates a new logic: the value of nature is now being measured, and the economy is beginning to consider environmental services. Environmental legislation in several countries, including in Europe, already places landowners as key players, making preservation a parallel path to production.

The role of science and businesses

The partnership between science and the private sector is growing. Forest areas are becoming open-air laboratories, with research on biodiversity, climate change, and conservation. Simultaneously, specialized tourism is growing, with visits of lower impact but high added value.

A paradigm shift

This phenomenon represents a structural change: conservation ceases to be a cost and becomes a source of production. Experts point out that by integrating conservation into the economy, a model emerges that generates development, local employment, and respect for the environment.

Thus, in various parts of the world, the market is beginning to recognize the value of nature standing – a fundamental step towards a more sustainable economy.
